In a touching family milestone for the rock world, Sean Danielsen, lead vocalist and guitarist of Smile Empty Soul, has announced that his 9-year-old daughter, Norah Danielsen, contributed vocals to the band’s forthcoming single “The Pretend Machine.” The track is scheduled for release this summer.
Danielsen shared the news through the band’s official social media channels on May 6, 2026, accompanying the post with a photo of Norah in the recording studio, headphones on and positioned at the microphone. In the announcement, he expressed genuine pride in his daughter’s talent: “My daughter Norah Danielsen just put down a vocal track on a new smile empty soul song called ‘the pretend machine’, that will be out this summer. She’s an amazing 9 year old, and I hope you all like her voice as much as I do.”
This collaboration represents a special father-daughter moment for the veteran rock act. Smile Empty Soul formed in 1998 in Santa Clarita, California, and rose to prominence in the early 2000s post-grunge and alternative rock scene. The band’s self-titled debut album achieved gold certification, powered by the hit single “Bottom of a Bottle.” Danielsen has remained the sole original member and primary creative force throughout the group’s 25-plus-year career. Today, Smile Empty Soul performs as a duo, with Danielsen joined by drummer Jon Loree.
“The Pretend Machine” has already been featured in the band’s 2026 live setlists, including performances on the Creed Cruise aboard the Norwegian Joy in April. The studio version featuring Norah’s vocals is expected to add a fresh, youthful dimension to the band’s signature hard-rock sound.
Norah is no stranger to the spotlight; she previously joined her father on a Smile Empty Soul cover of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” which is available on the band’s official YouTube channel. Fans have reacted positively to the announcement, eagerly anticipating how the young vocalist’s contribution will fit into the group’s evolving catalog.
The summer 2026 release of “The Pretend Machine” is shaping up to be one of the most personal and anticipated moments in Smile Empty Soul’s long history.
